Dahai ZHAO’s Exclusive Interview with CGTN: Effects of blood supply in China after Covid vaccine are minor

Dahai Zhao, a doctoral supervisor at the School of International and Public Affairs of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Executive Director of Shanghai Jiao Tong University-Yale University Joint Research Center for Health Policy, has been interviewed by CGYN for the 58st time (the 93st time by CGTN / ShanghaiTV) since the COVID-19 pandemic. On June 14, World Blood Donor Day, Zhao commented on China's blood supply in combating the pandemic on “China 24” of CGTN.

Anchor: During the Covid-19 pandemic, blood donation faced a lot of challenges... how would you assess the blood supply in China right now?

ZHAO: Overall, the current blood supply in China is optimistic. As far as I know, the first five months’ blood supply in 2021 is higher than the first 5 months in 2019. Further, since June this year, the average national blood inventory is more than 12 days, higher than the 7-day’s safety line. It can be said that the current blood stock is sufficient. In addition, there is no obvious decrease on the blood donations between the year of 2020 and 2019. It is mostly due to the scientific arrangement by the National Commission of Health in the early 2020. Specifically, in February 2020, the China National Commission of Health requires the blood management departments to strengthen the risk prevention awareness of blood supply, and dramatically mobilize the voluntary blood donation, and work out the plan for ensuring the supply of blood during the pandemic.

Anchor: Many people were worried about donating blood during the Covid-19 pandemic...and now that it's under control, some are wondering if it's safe to donate blood after getting vaccinated. What's your opinion?

ZHAO: It is a good question. It is safe to donate blood after getting vaccinated. Furthermore, citizens who got the inactivated vaccine such as the Sinopharm vaccine, can donate blood after two days from vaccinating. Citizens who got the other vaccines except for inactivated vaccines, can donate blood after two weeks from the vaccinating. China’s blood management departments and all blood stations have uniform and scientific regulations and protective measures for ensuring the blood donator’s safety and the blood safety. Both blood safety and blood donator’s safety are the first principal for the blood donations. Actually, the blood stations have collected a large number of blood donated by people who got vaccinated. The practice has confirmed that both the blood safety and the blood donator’s safety have been absolutely ensured.
